Breastfeeding

HIV can be transmitted from mother to baby through breast milk.  It has been shown that the risk of transmission is doubled if a mother decides to breastfeed.  This risk is further increased if the mother has cracked or bleeding nipples and if the baby is teething.  HIV-positive mothers are advised not to breastfeed where there is access to milk substitutes and clean water.

HIV-positive women should not donate breast milk.
