HIV

PIs

Also called protease inhibitors. This class of drugs includes amprenavir, atazanavir, indinavir, lopinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir and saquinavir.  These drugs are also taken orally and act against HIV directly.  Once the RNA of HIV has been transcribed into DNA, the CD4 cell can make new copies of HIV.  However, the raw materials of HIV must be assembled into new virus particles.  The protease inhbitors act against HIV at this stage of the replication process.
