There are conflicting opinions regarding whether HIV-positive mothers should undergo a vaginal delivery or a planned Caesarean section in order to reduce the risk of transmission to their baby.  Until recently all HIV-positive mothers were urged to have an elective Caesarean. However, with the introduction of antiretroviral therapy and the likelihood that mothers will have very low or even undetectable viral loads, a debate has formed.
