Knowledge of the impact HIV has in children is limited, as are the treatment options. We do know that:
• Children’s immune systems may be less effective at responding to HIV; • A child’s CD4 counts is often higher the younger they are and is therefore dependent on age; • HIV progression is different in children; • Children’s bodies process some drugs differently, requiring dosing adjustments; • A child’s body may not be able deal with the toxicities of some drugs; • There are less drugs available for children.
